Bucharest thus confirmed in the inter-bellum epoch its function as the main capital in South-East Europe, a leading position which it had had in fact for centuries and which it would unfortunately lose after 1948.
These changes were recorded not only in the documents of the administration, in statistic data, pictures taken by amateurs or technical plans of urban development. Painters, writers, journalists, architects produced their own chronographs and panoramas, often livelier and more telling than the official records.
The debates, often marked by keen polemics that animated the inter-bellum public life, did not shun the questions about Bucharest's future. What would happen in the new world to the quiet life in the old districts concealed by the gardens' shade?
